While I indulge in creativity of all kinds, I am, first and foremost, a writer.
Stories are my joy and lifeblood. Stories are the food of the soul.
All of Life is a Story we are in the midst of writing together.
When I was a child, there was a house on our cookie cutter, middle class, suburban street that everyone called "The Castle House." If the adults called it that, in my young mind, then it must be a real Castle. It had a proper tower, a real gate, was covered in Ivy and surrounded by tall trees and flowers, the very living suburban image of a Castle from my beloved books. An older lady lived there, and I was convinced she was a witch, a good one of course, who had endless mysteries and a wonderful, magical life behind those stone walls. I used to sit for hours on the sidewalk outside and stare at the house, imagining all the wondrous things that must happen inside.
I realize now that I was just a very weird kid who probably made that poor lady very uncomfortable.
However, that House has always lived on in my Imagination. Now, I have brought my imagination version of the House to life in my flowery fairytale stories and art being published as Collectible Handmade Miniature Books by Booksby Press.
In my magic House, there is a Bookwyrm (the dragon kind) in the attic, a Phoenix who lives in the oven, a Minotaur who lives nearby, and it is a woodland portal to infinite fantasy worlds. They have tea party birthdays, help the Squrriel Army collect magical seeds, and adventure to the Starlight Academy of Magical Sciences.
And we're just getting started on this Adventure!
I also write poetry. I didn't mean too, it just started showing up. Lines of words taking over my brain, distracting me with rhythm until I wrote them down.
And it turns out- People love poetry.
Surprising, I know.
But poetry is like dessert, a rich, decadent chocolate buttercream cake. A single slice is pure bliss and satisfaction, but a whole cake will make one sick. The same with Poetry. I realized that people loved my poems, but book of poetry is so pedantic, intimidating, reminiscent of classrooms and critique.
So I started doing my Poetry Postcard collections.
I began to illustrate concepts of the poems and created card collections by themes, just the right amount of dessert for the soul (maybe some extra for a friend! :)
They come gift wrapped and wax sealed, a feast for the eyes and soul, to be savored and shared, indulged and contemplated.
I came to art quite late. I was a dedicated Bookwyrm from out of the womb, taking to reading before I was out of diapers. I dreamed of nothing but writing fantastic stories, and of course, ended up an English major.
But after university, all the criticism of literary studies seemed to suck the joy out of my writing. I became terrified of "the blank page". So, I started doodling on the edges. Water-coloring the background. Pasting in stickers and cutouts of things I found fun or beautiful. When the page was already messy, it freed me up to write whatever "imperfect" words flowed through. It changed my creative process, and my life.
Art became a way to "balance" my mind, release the pressure of the words and share the story in a more vibrant and fun way. I have never formally studied art, but now I love seeing my drawing and painting skills improve with every illustration. It has become integral to my storytelling, my creative process. I love how it gives such a fun glimpse into the worlds that await within the words.
